Darcie’s great, great grandfather, Fritz R. Ruegsegger, came to America with his family from Switzerland in 1875 to pursue a career in winemaking. In 1883, Fritz’s son and Darcie’s great grandfather, Christian Ruegsegger started his own winery, the Alpine Winery, in St. Joseph, Missouri, which held bond #62 in the United States. Along with managing the vineyards and all winemaking tasks, Christian hand painted his own wine labels. We strated off making 10 plates a day to go and try to sell to different companies, my father worked two jobs while my mother worked part time and then slowly it turned into her attempting a sale in her food. Eventually we went to the city and we were informed that we needed a commercial kitchen in order to be able to sell food, so with that news we started searching for a small kitchen only to be able to make the 10 plates. So one day, we were driving home and my mother being the curious and impulsive person she is, decided to stop by this little place and ask if the hall kitchen was available, we got the blessing to speak with the beautiful Abby Devoto, she was amazing about everything and she let us know that, that kitchen wasn’t but that there was indeed another kitchen in what use to be the golf course cafe, available. Little by little it started to grow and eventually Abby had the idea of a restaurant, to my parents it was crazy but then she told the HOA and gave them the idea and such, my parents finally gave in and said “lets do it”. The Cheesecake Factory

In the 1940s, Evelyn Overton found a recipe in her local Detroit newspaper that inspired her “Original” cheesecake. Everyone loved her recipe so much she decided to open a small bakery, but eventually gave it up to focus on raising her children, David and Renee. She moved her baking equipment to her basement kitchen and continued to sell cakes to some of the best restaurants in town. In 1972, Evelyn and her husband Oscar moved to Los Angeles to try one last time to have their own business. With the last of their savings, they opened The Cheesecake Factory Bakery and began selling Evelyn’s cheesecakes to restaurants throughout L.A. Their son David decided to open a restaurant in Beverly Hills in 1978 to showcase his mother’s cakes. Somehow, he just knew that a restaurant with an extensive dessert menu would be a hit.
