Family owned and operated since 2000 The First Street Alehouse wants to be your home away from home. Inspired by two brothers who wanted to bring a small slice of Chico to their new home town, the Alehouse provides an upbeat, social atmosphere while fostering a strong sense of community. After a tremendous amount of community support, the Alehouse successfully transitioned to their new larger location in April of 2010. This has allowed them to better serve their guests. Now home to the largest publicly displayed beer can collection, housing over 6000 cans, the decor has changed but the feeling has not. A marriage, two kids and two dogs later these brothers continue to have the same vision for their business; provide quality food and beverages for a fair price, and treat everyone who walks in the door like they’re family. As you look around the Alehouse you will undoubtedly notice the stunning woodwork and incredible atmosphere, but if you look a bit closer you will see the subtle hints of a family. The hostess stand is lined with pictures of their kids, the family tricycle is hung from the rafters and their son’s footprints are set in the concrete as a reminder that they are all in this together. Set one foot in the door and it is obvious that people love being at the Alehouse. Guests sit conversing while enjoying great food and typically a frosty beverage, or two, but what stands out the most is the positivity and friendliness of the staff. The owners pride themselves on treating others like they would like to be treated and this policy is clearly visible when it comes to their staff benefits. Darcie’s great, great grandfather, Fritz R. Ruegsegger, came to America with his family from Switzerland in 1875 to pursue a career in winemaking. In 1883, Fritz’s son and Darcie’s great grandfather, Christian Ruegsegger started his own winery, the Alpine Winery, in St. Joseph, Missouri, which held bond #62 in the United States. Along with managing the vineyards and all winemaking tasks, Christian hand painted his own wine labels. The Alpine Winery bottled its last wine in 1945, when hard times following the repeal of Prohibition forced the family to shut down operations. Darcie Kent now proudly carries on the family tradition as a fifth generation vintner and artist for the winery that bears her name, Darcie Kent Vineyards. Brightworks and Tinkering School were shining examples of what makes child-centric learning transformative, in spite of the pandemic. Faced with so many challenges, it would have been easy to just do the bare minimum and wait for better days, but instead, across every program we saw innovation. From the engaging tinkering kits we sent home with every student, to the development of entirely new kinds of distance learning like the Mars Project – which connected summer camp kids to robots in a scale model of a lava tube – our staff created ways to keep students engaged and motivated. Our work in these programs stands out against the backdrop of incremental change in education as an example of what can be done. Our explorations have had an incredible impact on the lives of children around the world, who have been inspired to ask questions, build new skills, and believe more in their own abilities. The Cheesecake Factory
In the 1940s, Evelyn Overton found a recipe in her local Detroit newspaper that inspired her “Original” cheesecake. Everyone loved her recipe so much she decided to open a small bakery, but eventually gave it up to focus on raising her children, David and Renee. She moved her baking equipment to her basement kitchen and continued to sell cakes to some of the best restaurants in town. In 1972, Evelyn and her husband Oscar moved to Los Angeles to try one last time to have their own business. With the last of their savings, they opened The Cheesecake Factory Bakery and began selling Evelyn’s cheesecakes to restaurants throughout L.A. Their son David decided to open a restaurant in Beverly Hills in 1978 to showcase his mother’s cakes. Somehow, he just knew that a restaurant with an extensive dessert menu would be a hit. There was a line out the door on opening day. More than forty years later, many say the line has never stopped! [read more]
