In 1922, Giovanni and Virginia Biale left the town of Savona in Genoa, Italy with their three young sons, Giacomo, Mario and Rudolfo to make a new life in America. With help from a cousin, they made their way to San Francisco and settled in the Italian section of Potrero Hill. Less than a year later, my grandfather, Giovanni, opened “Biale’s Meat Market” on Connecticut Street. To this day “Biale” is still tiled in the entryway of the building. Giacomo “Jack”, my uncle, stayed in the butcher business while Mario, my father, and Rudy went into the bar and restaurant business in San Francisco, Phoenix and Honolulu. Rudy owned and operated two “Rudy’s Italian Restaurants” in Waikiki for 25 years. I worked at Rudy’s for 3 years with my brother Anthony. It was there I learned the importance of being a hands-on owner. People came from all over the world to visit “Rudy’s”, enjoying the food, the wine, and the gracious host. The idea of INC 82 came to us one day while trying to figure out where to go to eat in our local area. Eventually we went to the city and we were informed that we needed a commercial kitchen in order to be able to sell food, so with that news we started searching for a small kitchen only to be able to make the 10 plates. So one day, we were driving home and my mother being the curious and impulsive person she is, decided to stop by this little place and ask if the hall kitchen was available, we got the blessing to speak with the beautiful Abby Devoto, she was amazing about everything and she let us know that, that kitchen wasn’t but that there was indeed another kitchen in what use to be the golf course cafe, available. Little by little it started to grow and eventually Abby had the idea of a restaurant, to my parents it was crazy but then she told the HOA and gave them the idea and such, my parents finally gave in and said “lets do it”. In the spring of 1994 Christine and Johnny Crowell were considering opening a furniture store patterned on Johnny’s successful antique auto consignment business. Jamece and John Fondnazio joined them forming a partnership that has lasted for twenty plus years. The partners had a business plan that promoted high quality furniture and accessories priced to sell from the outset. The partners rejected the traditional consignment approach of initial overpricing coupled with automatic markdowns. Home Consignment Center was built on the concept of great stuff at great prices, and it’s a fun place to shop. That first year was exciting, if exhausting. The partners worked every day and without employees. This allowed them to learn every aspect of the business, first hand.
