In 1922, Giovanni and Virginia Biale left the town of Savona in Genoa, Italy with their three young sons, Giacomo, Mario and Rudolfo to make a new life in America. With help from a cousin, they made their way to San Francisco and settled in the Italian section of Potrero Hill. Less than a year later, my grandfather, Giovanni, opened “Biale’s Meat Market” on Connecticut Street. To this day “Biale” is still tiled in the entryway of the building. Giacomo “Jack”, my uncle, stayed in the butcher business while Mario, my father, and Rudy went into the bar and restaurant business in San Francisco, Phoenix and Honolulu. Rudy owned and operated two “Rudy’s Italian Restaurants” in Waikiki for 25 years. I worked at Rudy’s for 3 years with my brother Anthony. It was there I learned the importance of being a hands-on owner. People came from all over the world to visit “Rudy’s”, enjoying the food, the wine, and the gracious host. In the fall of 1999, I opened Rocco’s Ristorante & Pizzeria. I have tried to maintain that same warm and inviting feeling my father and uncle provided for so many years. Cuda Ridge produces all eight of the Bordeaux varietals including Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere. Cuda Ridge signature wines are Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. From time to time, winemaker Larry Dino, will produce non-Bordeaux style wines which are designated under the Black Label, these wines include Syrah, Sangiovese, New-World style Cabernet Sauvignon and our S&M blend. Cellar 13 Winery focuses on making high quality, award winning wines using fruit from only the best Vineyards. Darin Winton, the Winemaker, is one of the few Native American Winemakers in the United States. To honor his Cherokee Heritage, Cellar 13 Winery has proudly used the Cherokee language for their 2 Bordeaux style blends - the Right Bank Bordeaux style blend is named “Aliheliga” (“Grateful” in Cherokee) and the Left Bank Bordeaux style blend is named “Tsogadu" (13 in Cherokee). Art work featured on the back of these two labels are original works from Darin’s Uncle, Cherokee Artist, John Balloue. Having had a successful career in Water Services, Darin retired in 2017 and was immediately hired as the Assistant Wine Maker at 3 Steves Winery in Livermore, CA. Given the chance to learn about wine making from start to finish at 3 Steves, Darin was later afforded the opportunity to make wine under his own label. While Darin does the Winemaking, Gail Henderson runs the operations and marketing side of Cellar 13 Winery. Together, they have created a Winery that embodies the best of their passions and talents.
